Buying Your First E Cigarette: What Are the Options

Anyone thinking about quitting tobacco and taking up vaping may find that the list of options available to them is overwhelming. With that in mind, we’re going to break down the three categories of e-cigs that are currently available on the market.

Smaller pen-sized models are more popular with those who are just getting started with vaping. These often bear an appearance to actual cigarettes, which is what attracts new users to them in the first place. They’re small, inexpensive and have a relatively short battery life. Some are even marketed as ‘disposable’ e-cigs.

E Cigarette

For someone who wants to give vaping a try but would rather not invest too much money up front, a pen-sized unit may seem like a good idea. However, there are several downsides to these models. Given their size, they don’t hold much e-liquid, which means you’ll have to refill them often. Short battery life means you’ll have to carry at least a couple with you for an evening out. Finally, replacing e-liquid cartridges (which some models use) can become expensive.

Standard e-cig

The most common type of e-cigs are often referred to as Ego-like models. (Ego is perhaps the best known brand that produces this type of e-cig.) These models are still relatively affordable, though they’ll cost a bit more than a pen-sized model. For most people, this is the type of e-cig they imagine when they talk about vaping – a long ‘pipe’ with a visible tank and a mouthpiece from which to draw the vapour.

Tank sizes vary, but many models have a large enough capacity to last through an evening of moderate vaping. Batteries are usually stronger and last longer, which means a single vape is likely to produce more vapour for a longer duration before the quality of the vape begins to taper. The best way to purchase one of these models is as an e cigarette starter kit, which will be equipped with one or two batteries, a tank, a charging unit and one or two heating elements. Many distributors also throw in a vial of e-liquid to get you started.

Mods are for more enthusiastic vapers. Dealing with one of these units requires a little bit of specialist knowledge, though it’s nothing that can’t be gleaned from a Web search. Mods (i.e. modifiable e-cigs) take a mix-and-match approach to vaping. You generally begin with a large battery unit – typically equipped with a variable voltage adjuster. This is combined with a separate tank (many styles available). The end result is a stylish e-cig that can be personalised to suit your tastes.

Mechanical mods are the most expensive option, but this is reflected in higher quality construction and a more unique look. You can easily create an e-cig that doesn’t look quite like anyone else’s. It’s also possible to enhance the vaping experience with more powerful heating elements and varying levels of resistance to control the unit’s power output.

Those are the three main categories. To be fair, there are plenty of other options available as well, such as manual (button-press) models and those that automatically click on when you start to draw on them. However, the three categories listed above are enough to steer your search in the right direction.
